Why study Chemical Science?
Chemistry is a discipline that interfaces with many other disciplines; particularly biology and materials science and nanotechnology. This creates some of the most dynamic and rapidly expanding areas of research both within UQ and world wide.
Biological Chemistry Stream: A clearer and more precise understanding of the molecular processes that occur in biological systems is empowering researchers in the biological fields. You will gain a comprehensive understanding of the core chemical principles and how they can be applied to and enrich biological research. In addition, you will have a profound knowledge of the structure and functions of complex biological systems which is essential in modern pharmaceutical, and medical research.
Nanotechnology Stream: An understanding of the underlying chemical principles in nanotechnology enables preparation of advanced materials and the exploration of their properties. With the striking rate of recent advances in this area, nanotechnology is having a major impact on the life sciences, biotechnology, the electronics industry and materials science. Employment opportunities
The demand for scientists with comprehensive, multidisciplinary skills and expertise is very high both in Australia and overseas. Graduates of these dual majors will be highly sort after in the pharmaceutical and medical research fields, biotechnology sector, materials manufacturing and development companies. These dual majors also provide the perfect platform from which to embark upon a research career at the interface of chemistry and biology or chemistry and material sciences.
This major is accredited by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute for the educational relevance of its chemistry content.
