Why study Bioinformatics?
This dual major is no longer available from semester 1, 2018. Students may complete the Bioinformatics single major.
Bioinformatics is a multidisciplinary science which applies computers to enhance our understanding of biology. Computational biology is changing the way we manage our health and the environment and how research in biological science is conducted. Biologists everywhere will increasingly require a working knowledge of this area as industries move more deeply into genetic technologies and the use of computing to simulate biological processes.

Employment opportunities
There is a world shortage of trained bioinformaticists and computational biologistics. Combinations of this program with a program or courses in computing, mathematics or biology are particularly advantageous. Employment opportunities exist with biotechnology companies, research organisations and government.
