Course description
We are living in a rapidly changing world. Despite some improvements in poverty levels, inequality keeps rising and issues like climate change, financial crises, disasters, conflict, and a global pandemic, continue to challenge all nations around the world. Complex issues like these need holistic and sustainable solutions, which can only be found when people think and collaborate in a transdisciplinary way. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide an agenda to tackle these issues on a global scale. This Level 3 course unpacks the causes and drivers that have led to the current predicament, and teaches the principles and practices of a diverse set of theories, frameworks and methodologies needed to address the complexities. Students will learn to embrace, identify and analyse the challenges of the Sustainable Development Goals, and engage in critical thinking, reflection and practical exercises in collaboration with students and academics from across UQ and with industry partners. The course is divided into three blocks: (1) Knowing the crisis, (2) Responding to the crisis, and (3) Working together in the crisis. At the end of the course, students will be equipped with analytical, practical and collaborative skills, and have developed hope and commitment to take on the challenge of making the world a better place and realise their responsibility as a global citizen.
