Maximum quota of 35 students. Enrolment is available to the first 35 students who enrol in this course on mySI-net.
The course is designed for a wide range of students: (1) those with a particular interest in working in the area of mental health and/or health (2) those who are interested in working in areas which require knowledge and understanding of mental health issues such as Crisis Care, child abuse, domestic violence, alcohol and drug services. The course provides a critical exploration of mental health and the social impact that mental illness has on individuals, families and society. It explores the ways in which people with mental illness are marginalised and excluded within our society, and develops the skills to link the personal experiences of people in the mental health system with social and political structures. It focuses on the expansion of knowledge gained in earlier social work subjects, and concentrates on the development of knowledge of resources and generic social work assessment and intervention skills. The focus is also on individual casework, family and group work, and on working in a mental health organisation as a member of both a social work and a multidisciplinary team.
