Social work intervention in the child protection field is directed to improving the quality of children's lives. It encompasses a range of specialised areas, from early intervention and family support through to statutory assessment and intervention and out of home care. Social workers may be involved in direct practice with children and families, as well as work at organisational, community and policy levels. This elective will be valuable to all students who wish to understand the importance of child protection issues in most fields of social work practice. It focuses on the professional knowledge and skills required to work effectively with vulnerable children and families and aims to convey to students an understanding of the realities and complexities of practice in the child protection field. Upon completion of the elective students are expected to be able to perform a selection of typical professional tasks in this field at a beginning level of competency.
