Course description
SPAN1010 is a course for absolute beginners, as such, it assumes no previous experience with the Spanish language. It provides an introduction to basic communication skills and knowledge of Spanish language and culture, and while speaking and listening skills are emphasised, reading and writing are also an important part of the course. In addition to linguistic skills, the course will also introduce you the colonial history of the language and invite you to think about and critically reflect on the¿resulting intersectional diversities (racial, linguistic, and cultural, etc.) that characterise the Spanish-speaking world today.¿
Our teaching approach centres on task-oriented language acquisition practices designed to help you progress your ability to communicate in Spanish towards the ¿A1 Breakthrough¿ (Beginner) level of linguistic competency described in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) ¿[Click to self-assess your CEFR level]¿ through highly engaging in-class activities and a wide range of complementary activities to be completed independently. ¿Skills and knowledge acquired in SPAN1010 provide you with a solid foundation upon which to build by enrolling in SPAN1020 in Semester 2.
