Course description

Emotions are part of everyday life and at the crux of many contemporary challenges. They are implicated in learning, managing, donating, and also in burnout, criminal activity, mental illness and social inequality. Although emotions are often thought of as physiological responses, in this course students will develop an appreciation of the relational aspects of emotion. The course examines various conceptualisations of emotion and the treatment of emotions in research, law, medicine and business, along with key theories used in grasping the centrality of emotion to social life. Drawing mainly from the sociology of emotions, but also from history, business, psychology, education and legal studies, this course will challenge widely held binaries (e.g., emotion vs. reason) and invite students to develop skills in reflexively and critically analysing their own emotions.
