Course description

This course aims to provide a framework for investigating Children's Environmental Health. Students will gain an increased understanding and interest about the beneficial and adverse influences of environmental factors on children's health, development and well being. In this course, students are provided with the skills necessary to understand the unique biological characteristics of children and are introduced to the concepts of developmental stage specific susceptibilities and exposure assessment in children. The course covers specific adverse effects in children including infectious diseases, asthma and other respiratory diseases, childhood cancers, neurobehavioural and developmental disorders, endocrine disorders and reproductive health effects caused by a range of environmental exposures such as air pollution, air toxics, bioaerosols, persistent toxic substances and heavy metals. The important role of exposure to poor water quality, sanitation and hygiene and the compounding effects of poverty and malnutrition are also explored. This course may not be offered if the enrolment is less than 10 students.
