Course description
This course is aimed at students wishing to apply for work as policy officers in the Queensland public service. It will provide an overview of what the Queensland Government comprises, what it does and what it is responsible for, and how policy development works in practice. It will include examining the theoretical stages of the 'policy cycle', as well as having a strong practical component to develop some of the essential skills required for work as a policy practitioner.
In the course of the unit students will visit (subject to time-tabling) the Cabinet Secretariat, the Parliamentary Bills and Papers office, sit in on Question Time, and visit a policy unit in a government department. Government and public sector visitors will also be invited to talk to the class.
