Course description

An intensive and critical examination of two concepts central to the study of Peace & Conflict Studies: conflict and its 'opposite', non-violence. The course outlines theoretical backgrounds to conflict and practical examples of violence and war and contrasts these with the technique of non-violence as a means for controlling political power and effecting social change. Analysis focuses on the nature of power, its sources, function of consent, meaning of conflict and non-violence, dynamics and mechanisms of non-violence, civilian-based defence, and efficacy of various methods in relation to circumstances. Extensive use is made of case histories such as Palestine, South Africa, the Philippines, East Timor and so forth.
