Course description

This course examines the relationship between politics and language from two perspectives. The first treats contemporary democratic politics as primarily a linguistic activity, and from here explores issues such as conceptual change, policy legitimation, satire, and euphemism. The second perspective treats language as the object of political struggle, and attention then turns to topics such as free speech, identity, and protest.
