Course description
The Paramedic Clinical Skills 1 course has three primary themes; communication skills, history-taking and physical examination, and procedural skills. Throughout the semester students will be given the opportunity to develop these skills on each other and in a simulated environment. This course is complemented by concurrent studies in cardiovascular and respiratory conditions and emergencies, allowing students to begin to effectively integrate history taking, physical examination, communication and procedural skills into the patient management cycle. Communication skills will include topics such as active listening, non-verbal communication, communicating in teams, crowd management, graded assertiveness and communication with family members, carers and professionals. Students will also develop cardiovascular, respiratory and abdominal physical examination skills and focused history-taking skills for these body systems. Procedural skills associated with the management of cardiovascular and respiratory emergenciess will also be taught as part of this course, building on information from the Preparation for Paramedic Practice courses completed in year 1 of the program.
