Course description
Preparation for Paramedic Practice 1 will provide students with foundational knowledge essential to their role as student paramedics. Topics will include the history of pre-hospital care, structure and function of ambulance services in Australia and internationally, the role of paramedics within the health care system and the national Paramedic Competency Standards. Students will gain knowledge of the function and operation of standard ambulance equipment and will be taught basic microbiology and the importance and processes of infection control, universal precautions and the correct use of personal protective equipment. Students will gain knowledge of common medical terminology and approved medical abbreviations and an introduction to legislative and legal aspects of paramedic practice. Students will visit an Ambulance Operations Centre to gain an understanding of how requests for ambulance assistance are received, managed and dispatched.
