Course description
Students will learn about homeostasis, as well as optimising defences against infection & issues associated with antibiotic use using practice problems. Knowledge of later life physical & psychological development & the major health & social issues associated with ageing will be explored in relation to how nursing management is affected. Using practice problems involving elderly people with multiple health problems, the course will cover how social & health care delivery implications of caring for ageing populations in Australia impact on nursing; the rights of the older person; the ethical & legal issues relating to the non-competent adult; the range of care provided for the elderly & disabled in the community including informal care in the family. Strategies to minimise impact on the health of the carers, and the prevalence & risk factors for ageing related health problems & strategies to prevent these problems will also be explored.
