Course description
This course examines the interaction of visual cultures (art and film) within Asia, and between Asia and the `West'. It will focus especially on East Asian countries such as China, Japan and Korea, but will also include parts of Southeast Asia. Lectures will introduce students to the cross-cultural nature of Asian visual cultures by exploring historical and contemporary, local and global influences that have shaped these over time. They will take a thematic approach and explore issues relating to a range of topics including religion and philosophy, family and tradition, Asian masculinities and femininities, power and politics, sites of resistance, Asian Diasporas, and East-West cross-cultural exchanges.
