Course description
This course will be first offered from Semester 1 2026. This is a 16-unit, year-long course with MEDI7300 as a prerequisite. The focus of the course is on working as part of a clinical team in assessing and managing patients with acute, complex conditions and presentations, and preparing students for success as interns. The first half of the year will include three clinical placements: General Practice, Hospital Practice, and Clinical Exchange. Within these placements, students will build on their earlier clinical experience and learn from a range of specialists contributing to the integrated care of patients to further develop their skills in the diagnosis and management of acute and emergency presentations, the management of chronic disease and its complications, and relevant procedural skills. The second half of the year will consist of two immersive experiences: an 8-week elective followed by a 10-week pre-internship placement. The aim of the elective is to provide students with choice. Students may wish to explore future medical career interests, engage in professional growth, contribute to health services in areas of need, study overseas or immerse themselves in experiences to enhance their research or clinical skills. Through the whole year, there will be a structured teaching program integrating clinical science and practice as well as a focus on career planning and professional development in preparation for the transition to internship / residency.
