Course description

The fourth year core paediatric rotation is a clinical placement immersion during which students are integrated within the hospital and participate in clinical work under supervision. The rotation begins with a half-day video conferencing orientation program to introduce aspects of paediatrics not encountered in adult rotations. Students attend didactic sessions (e.g. videoconferenced lectures) and access the paediatric online interactive education (POLIE) modules, which are accompanied by weekly tutorials (POLIE face-to-face tutorials) to consolidate learning. Students engage in clinical work in various settings, including the emergency department, post-take ward rounds, daily junior staff ward rounds, outpatient clinics, newborn nursery and post-natal wards. Students gain clinical experience in neonatology, emergency medicine, general paediatrics, adolescent medicine, surgery, community paediatrics, child and adolescent psychiatry, radiology and the specialties of ENT, ophthalmology and others. The timetable and delivery mode of the teaching will depend on whether the student is on rotation in a metropolitan hospital (Mater Children's Hospital, Royal Children's Hospital, Wesley Hospital), a non-metropolitan hospital (Redlands, Ipswich, Caboolture, Redcliffe, Nambour), a regional hospital (Hervey Bay, Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Toowoomba), or an international clinical school (Brunei, International Malaysian University, Ochsner Clinic). More complete details are available on the Paediatrics & Child Health blackboard site. The rotation grade is based on a satisfactory Clinical Participation Assessment, three work-based (mini-CEX) assessments and an examination in the last week of the rotation, which includes multi-choice questions (MCQ) and objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) style stations. The Year 4 OSCE also includes paediatric stations.
