Course description
The Surgery rotation is conducted in teaching hospitals in Queensland. Six weeks are devoted to General Surgery (including vascular surgery and urology) and two weeks to Orthopaedic Surgery. In General Surgery, a group of students are allocated to each clinical unit. Patients in the unit are allocated to individual students, who should see "their" patients daily and participate in all that happens during the patient's episode of care. In addition, students should attend outpatients, ward rounds, operating theatre, and other unit meetings. Each student completes three case studies using a proformas designed to focus and develop their clinical reasoning skills. Similar activities are undertaken in Orthopaedic Surgery. A logbook (Clinical Competencies Handbook) documents and guides students in their acquisition of practical skills.
