Course description
This course Clinical Practice 2, builds on the skills learned in Clinical Skills 1 and 2 and Clinical Practice 1. Development of the skills from the previous courses is facilitated by exposure of the students to real patients both under supervision and in their own time. The course structure includes Clinical Coaching, Clinical Communication, Masterclasses and Procedural Skills. Clinical Coaching develops from the peer group practice of Clinical Skills 1 and 2, to being taught in small groups using real patients as the basis for learning. In this way students' skills are developed to enable them to take a focused history, perform a focused examination and then use clinical reasoning to establish both provisional and differential diagnoses. Students are required to create a written portfolio of long and short cases about patients that they have seen. Clinical Communication in Clinical Practice 2 again builds on the communication skills taught in Clinical Skills 1 and 2 and Clinical Practice 1. Small group tutorials and role plays explore more difficult and challenging patient encounters. Masterclasses consist of a selection of medical and surgical workshops designed to enhance basic clinical skills across a range of specialities. Procedural Skills Workshops (advanced) provide the opportunity for students to learn and then practise a range of more advanced procedures.
