Course description
Not offered in 2013. 'Books that Shook the World' is a course which attempts to give students an insight into the ways in which notions of tradition, canonicity, artistic movements and cultural construction can be problematised. It does this by examining texts which, in varying ways, contest a hegemonic culture. The course is split into two main parts, an introductory series of lectures which examine the theoretical background to the course, and then a series of guest lectures in which members of SLCCS present a series of texts from their specialist cultures. The texts are chosen both for their relevance to the aims of the course and because of the impact they have had on the world. This course may be cancelled if there are fewer than 20 enrolments.
