Course description

This course will explore China's unique literary heritage in a survey spanning the Analects of Confucius, Daoism, the classical novels Journey to the West and The Story of the Stone, and the writings of outstanding modern and contemporary authors, including fiction by China's Nobel-prize winner Gao Xingjian. Through background readings, excerpts, lectures and discussions, students will be encouraged to piece together their own perspective on the meaning and the significance of the Great Stories of China.
