Course description

NOT 2010. Law plays a pivotal but under-appreciated role in shaping the devices of representative democracy. This course focuses on the role, structure and rationale of parliaments, the central political institution in representative democracy, and the scope of the freedom of political communication. As part of this, it offers a detailed examination of the electoral processes to which parliaments and hence governments are ultimately accountable, with particular attention to values such as political equality and competitiveness. This includes the regulation of the participants and finances involved in electoral democracy. The course will be taught in a theoretical and contextual manner.
