Course description
Jurisprudence offers an overview of the historical, doctrinal & philosophical perspectives that have influenced the development of law, together with an introduction to key theoretical positions & interdisciplinary movements that provide critique and commentary on the role of law. Topics include theoretical accounts of the nature of law (including the theories of Hart, Dworkin, Austin, and Kelsen); the central ideas of the natural law tradition, the nature of legal reasoning & the role of the judge; the analytical nature of legal rights & duties; conceptions of justice; the internal organisation of the law; & an introduction to a range of theoretical perspectives of the law, both internal & external.
