Course description

The Australian healthcare system is a complicated map of stakeholders, their responsibilities and contributions to the system. Furthermore, with changing demographics, disease, and social trends, there is no doubt that healthcare systems will look very different in the future. This course unravels and explores the structure and function of the Australian healthcare system considering the majors players of government, private organisations,and other providers. Participants will also analyse and gain an understanding of how disease patterns, changing demographics, and geography ultimately impact on the healthcare system. In considering future challenges, participants will take a look at what the Australian healthcare system might look like in 2020. The course will deliver case based examples to illustrate the current demands on our healthcare system and its effectiveness. Participants will develop data analysis skills, identify trends, and gain an appreciation for the future directions of healthcare. Through the knowledge gained from this course participants will know how disease trends, community expectations, workforce trends,government policy and healthcare models all influence the changing landscape of Australian healthcare, which will assist health professionals participating in public health planning and policy making for Australian health services.
