Course description
This course examines dissenting religious movements in Medieval (Western) Europe from c.1000-c.1500, focusing also on attitudes towards outsider groups within medieval society and the treatment of these groups by medieval Christians. Topics to be addressed include orthodoxy, the birth of popular heresy, the development of religious climate, dualist beliefs, evangelical and academic heresies, persecution of the Jews, the Inquisition, and the theology of persecution. This course may not run if there are fewer than 20 enrolments.
