Course description
This course examines a period of European history that is sometimes called the `Dark Ages,' an era dominated by the Roman and Carolingian empires. These centuries witnessed the mass movement of ethnic groups across Europe, constant invasions at the hands of the Vikings, Huns, and Arabs. Significantly, the period more commonly known as Late Antiquity or the Early Middle Ages saw the collapse of the Roman Empire, the triumph of Christianity over paganism, the birth of Islam, the rise of France and England, the rise of the papacy and the Roman Church, and in many ways the transition from an ancient to Medieval world. The complexities and ramifications of this transformation will be considered throughout this course. This course may not run if there are fewer than 20 enrolments.
