Course description
This course introduces students to significant aspects of the cognitive evolution & social influence of the biomedical & social sciences in Europe from the time of the scientific revolution to the end of the nineteenth century. Topics covered include: the influence of the scientific revolution on theories of physiology & mental functions; the diagnosis & treatment of madness, 1680-1832; theories of life & reproduction, 1800-1860; the emergence of the modern medical profession, 1760-1860; phrenology & its social influence; obstetrics & gynaecology, 1780-1900; public health & disease in industrial Europe, 1830-1900; scientific explanations of crime & social deviancy 1840-1900; old age & its management, 1680-1900.
