Course description
This course will provide an understanding of uptake and distribution of non-therapeutic chemicals, environmental pollutants and toxins in body based on the pharmacokinetics and dynamics principals. Topics that will be explored in this course include xenobiotic exposure and distribution (adsorption, metabolism and elimination) in the body using single- & multi-compartmental models and non-compartmental analysis. Additionally, the student will also develop an understanding of inter-species scaling factors, the relationship between toxico-kinetics and toxico-dynamics, and the mechanisms of toxicity, exposure pathways and the detection of toxins. Students will be able to critically analyse toxicokinetic data to understand the risk associated with chemicals and toxins, where several examples will be discussed throughout the course, and to develop predictive models for chemical risk assessments. This course is relevant to all students who are interested in understanding and interpreting risk related to chemicals and toxins in the body.
