Course description

Emmett This course examines a series of significant literary works from the 19th and early 20th centuries that explore what it means to be American. We investigate this question from a variety of standpoints: how is American-ness defined in relation to religious affiliation, indigeneity, Europe, race, gender, class and sexuality? Works studied may include those by authors such as Henry David Thoreau, Herman Melville, Edgar Allan Poe, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Edith Wharton, Henry James and William Faulkner. NOTE: Course offering may be cancelled unless a minimum of 20 students enrol.
