Course description

The cheif focus of this course is on some of the most significant English and Irish 'modernist' writers of the early 20th century (roughly 1900-1930). Because the modernists are experimenting with new forms during a period of radically changing values, close reading of literary workin the context of the periods is the method of study. Authors may include novelists such as D H Lawrence, Edith Wharton, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and Joseph Conrad, and poets such as T S Eliot and W H Auden. NOTE: Course offering may be cancelled unless a minimum of 20 students enrol.
