Course description
This course allows students to explore the work of major writers from an era marked by profound social, political, and intellectual transformation. Progress was the byword of the Victorian period and the literary world responded to new ideas and new anxieties--evolution, industrialization, the rights of women, decadence and degeneration--with new genres including the industrial novel, sensation fiction, and the science fiction dystopia. Authors may include Dickens, Darwin, Tennyson, Eliot, Gaskell, Rossetti, Wilde, H. G. Wells and Conrad. NOTE: Course offering may be cancelled unless a minimum of 20 students enrol.
