Course description
The artistic and philosophical movement known as Romanticism arose in the context of revolutions in France, America and other parts of the world. Many of the writers of this periods saw themselves as part of a utopian transformation of humanity, while others agonized over the potential for radical destabilization that new understanding of the rights of the individuals had ushered in. This course explores a number of American and British romantic authors in the context of these momentous devleopments, including Burke, Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Wollstonecraft, Mary Shelley, Emerson, Thoreau and Hawthorne, among others. NOTE: Course offering may be cancelled unless a minimum of 20 students enrol.
