Module description

This Module–Leading the Science of Learning in Practice–will provide students with an understanding of some key principles of the science of learning, and how they can effectively lead others to engage with and apply these principles in their practice. It will provide students with an overview of some important developments in the science of learning, particularly as they relate to organisational change or strategic planning, whilst also considering some of the challenges around both the effective communication and translation of research into practice and the promotion of professional learning and growth within an organisation. Students will explore current models of leadership in schools, with a particular emphasis on Instructional Leadership, examining how Instructional Leadership fits with principles from the Science of Learning. The module will be structured around three key concepts relating to effective leadership in the science of learning: 1) problem framing, 2) examining the evidence base, and 3) taking action. A range of evidence from both research and practice will be examined, developing skills in critical evaluation as well as translation. Case Studies of schools and organisations will be explored as illustrations of the implementation of the Science of Learning into practice. The module content is relevant to AITSL Professional Standards for Teachers No. 3, 4, 6, and 7. This module has the potential to be stacked for UQ credit.
Students will have up to 3 months to complete the module.
