Module description

This module will provide students with a broad introduction to the multidisciplinary field of the science of learning, including considerations for how key ideas can be applied in practice. The Science of Learning brings together research from across education, neuroscience and psychology to better understand the processes underpinning learning and what these might mean for teaching (also known as Mind, Brain and Education, and Educational Neuroscience). This module will explore some key concepts in research relating to what promotes and hinders learning from the level of the 'synapse' through to the socio-cultural level, developing an understanding of the highly integrated, embodied processes involved in learning individually and collectively. It will include an overview of basic brain anatomy and physiology, and what the evidence suggests about the developmental and environmental influences on the brain, the body, and learning. Using this holistic science of learning lens, students will develop an understanding of the integrated role of cognitive, affective, social and biological processes in learning and teaching, and in particular the role that these constructs play in attention, memory, learning regulation, social connection, motivation, engagement, wellbeing and achievement. This module provides an introduction to these constructs which can then be explored in more depth in subsequent modules. There will be a strong emphasis on the translation and application of the science of learning research into practice - on the practical implications for teaching and learning in authentic contexts. Students will be encouraged to reflect on their understanding and beliefs around what learning is and how people learn and will use this reflection to inform their professional identity and practice. This module aligns with AITSL Professional Standards for Teachers No. 1, 2 and 6.
