Course description

This course examines the notion of public education in a historical and contemporary context. It includes consideration of the specific interests of the State in providing access and quality education to all citizens. It also includes consideration of how educational institutions create and maintain a "public commons" - a public civic space of shared knowledge, practices and values. This course examines the critical issues shaping public education today, identifies the unique contributions public education makes, and has the potential to make to Australian society, and challenges students to think about the future characteristics of public education.
