Course description
This course introduces students to theories of learning and teaching mathematics in the secondary school, and develops practical skills relating to lesson planning and presentation, curriculum design and assessment in the context of the junior mathematics syllabus (Years 8 - 10). Attention is also given to current issues in mathematics education, such as the role of language and communication in learning, curriculum integration, gender issues, cultural perspectives on mathematics, and the impact of educationa technologies on mathematics teaching and learning. Studemts will be encouraged to develop their identities as beginning teachers whose responsibilities extend well beyond the classroom and the school to include interaction with other professionals, students, families, and the community surrounding the school.
