Assessment methods

A. Formative Assessment: a. Questions associated with the previous week of lectures will be provided each week. Once the questions are completed, answers will be provided to the students (web based). b. Feedback from supervisor to the student (supervisor input) B. Summative Assessment: a. Web based examination of theory at the end of the semesters aligned with the UQ calender. b. Supervisor's report c. Validation of the logbook by the supervisor. d. Submission by the student of two comprehensive echocardiographic studies with all the associated images on disc, with verification by the student and their supervisor that the scans have been acquired and interpreted by the student.

Course description

This course will introduce the student to the basic theoretical principles of echocardiography including image generation and Doppler ultrasound. The ultrasonic anatomy for both transthoracic and transoesophageal imaging will be detailed along with comprehensive study protocols for both modalities. Techniques to optimise imaging will be covered including the use of contrast. Assessment of ventricular function is described and a basic introduction to valvular assessment will be given. At the end of this course the student should be able to perform and report a normal echocardiogram and be aware of the relevant safety and infection control issues.
