Course description

This foundational design course introduces diverse design methods and their applications across key phases of the design process. Design methods are like tools in a designer's toolbox, each serving a specific purpose to explore, test, and refine ideas. A comprehensive toolkit enables designers to be versatile and equipped to select the most appropriate tools¿whether that is user research, brainstorming, prototyping, or testing¿to achieve the best possible outcome.

In this course, you will experiment with various methods to tackle design challenges, learning to select the most effective approach based on the problem, context, and stage of the process.

Through hands-on practice, you will develop confidence in iterative, empathetic problem-solving and adapt to challenges in different design contexts. You will collaborate with your peers to test human-centred design methods in the classroom while learning to communicate design process and ideas through sketches, diagrams, and low fidelity prototypes.

This course encourages creative exploration of design methods and will equip you with the tools you need to respond to projects effectively in design studios.
