Course description
This course will explore the recent "spatial turn" within Theatre and Performance Studies by examining the topics of "space" and "place" in relation to performance. Ric Knowles's assertion that "[t]he geography of performance is both produced by and produces the landscape and the social organization of the space in which it `takes place'" (Reading the Material Theatre 63) will guide our exploration of this topic. Over a six-week master class, students will read influential philosophical treatises on space alongside recent work by Theatre and Performance Studies scholars and Cultural Geographers that responds to and expands upon these ideas.
