Course description
The transformative model of mediation has specific practices requiring specific skills, and is based on a distinctive theory of conflict and the third-party role. Topics addressed in the course include: understanding conflict patterns and dynamics; the mediator's role in the transformative model; underlying premises/foundations of practice; transformative practices; identifying intervention opportunities; mediator responses and intervention strategies; core skills; avoiding directiveness; integration of mediation with the legal process; power and fairness; and, mediation ethics and mediation policy. The curriculum and materials in this course have been used widely to train mediators, including those in the United States Postal Service's award-winning workplace mediation program. There is a strong focus on simulations and coaching to develop practice skills.
