Course description

Increasingly, communication processes are being included in the upstream design of major development projects, both domestically within Australia and internationally. Although the inclusion of a communication for social change component is not yet a standard feature in project development, the value of this element is becoming increasingly apparent to planners, administrators, donors and implementing agencies. Internationally, the importance of communication for social change has been recognised by the World Bank, UN agencies and NGOs. This was evidenced by a global World Congress on the subject hosted by the World Bank and FAO in Rome in 2006. Considerable literature is now available showing the positive effects of communication in the development process. This course provides students with the opportunity to study, at first-hand, the work of a not-for-profit, commercial or Government agency in designing and implementing a major project. Students will be assigned to work in a hands-on situation and to both participate in project implementation and to critically assess project expectations, limitations and outcomes.
