Course description
The course studies the earliest major Chinese novel, Tales of the Three Kingdoms, & its lasting influence on the attitudes & behaviour of Chinese people over the past 400 years. The course includes readings & discussion of selected texts from the novel plus viewing & evaluation of the TV adaptation of the novel. It is aimed at native & background speakers of Chinese & non-native speakers with an advanced command of the Chinese language. The course emphasizes developing students' reading skills in Chinese & their ability to analyse the literary merits of the texts. Attention will also be paid to the social & cultural contexts of the novel to enhance students' understanding of traditional China. Course offering may be cancelled unless a minimum of 20 students enrol.
