Course description
The course introduces the basic foundations of chemistry, and includes those aspects of organic and inorganic chemistry that underpin agricultural and biological sciences, including applied chemical analysis. Core topics include: atomic structure, bonding and hybridisation, molecular shape, an introduction to organic chemistry, states of matter and intermolecular forces, chemical equilibrium, and aqueous solution equilibria. Laboratory skills will be developed through gaining experience in various laboratory techniques, while the ability to collect, analyse and organise information and ideas, and work and learn independently will be developed.
