Course description

This course will be first offered in Semester 1, 2017.
This course provides students an intensive field-based experience in marine biology at the beginning of their 3rd year and would be based at the Moreton Bay Research Station on North Stradbroke Island. It will confer deep experiential understanding of the challenges of working in marine environments, exposure and practice with a wide range of data and organismal collection techniques including identification and analysis, sediment and in-fauna analysis, species identification, biodiversity, parasitology, pollution, seagrass and mangrove habitats. It would provide the experiential basis from which to contextualize the content of other marine courses in their 3rd level classes. It will use Education Queensland¿s vessel 'Inspiration' as a platform for open water work. It will provide interactions with indigenous managers of Quandamooka and Moreton Bay Marine Park staff to provide a societal context for marine resource values by using a living classroom. Much of this course will run before the start of Semester 1. There is a quota attached to this course but students enrolled in the Marine Science/Marine Biology extended major will be given preference. Any remaining places will be made available to students enrolled in any other major who have met the prerequisites, with the selection of these students being merit-based on the student¿s GPA.
