This course explores the biology & biogeography of marine plants, algae & micro-organisms with an emphasis on their roles in marine ecosystems, & their potential role in producing alternative sources of energy & bioactive metabolites for drug development. Students will be introduced to identification techniques, the evolutionary origins, & life histories of these organisms. The field trip will be held during the mid-semester break and is a COMPULSORY component of the course. Students will not be able to complete the course successfully without attending the field trip. There is an extra cost associated with the field trip. Students should email biologyadmin@uq.edu.au to request permission to enrol.
