Course description

This course gives students a broad overview of the archaeology of ancient Egypt from the Predynastic to the New Kingdom (3500-1070 BC). Using the archaeological record, this course explores Egyptian gods, animal deities, divine kings, pyramids, temples, mummification, society, government, and crafts. We will untangle common Egyptian beliefs about identity religion, medicine, magic, sex, childbirth, slavery, and death through a focus on material culture and social agency. Current issues of heritage, conservation & repatriation will also be addressed.
